That Habit You Can't Seem to Break?? Here's Why...

Hi Syndi,

Everybody's got a habit they swear they'll break. Sadly, most never do.

Have you ever sat down on a Sunday night, filled with inspiration, and declared:

“Starting tomorrow, everything changes. I’m waking up at 5:00 AM, eating perfectly, cutting out sugar, and working out every single day.”

Monday goes great.

Tuesday is okay.

By Thursday afternoon, stress hits, life gets messy, and you crash right back into your old patterns.

By Friday night, you feel like a failure.

The problem is you tried to overhaul your whole life in one week through sheer willpower, and willpower always runs out.

Real change doesn't happen through a massive life overhaul. It happens by fixing the specific, daily habits that quietly pull you off track.

Maybe it’s the phone you keep reaching for when you’re supposed to be working. The procrastination you swear you’ll stop. The habit of saying yes when you really want to say no. The scrolling, the snacking, the avoiding, the spending...

We all have patterns we know aren’t serving us, yet somehow keep repeating.

The problem isn’t that you don’t want to change.

The problem is that most of us have been taught to think about change the wrong way.

We think we're doing something wrong.
We think it's just who we are.
We think everyone else has this figured out.
We think one mistake means we’ve failed.

But your habits are not random.

They’re patterns your brain has learned because, somewhere along the way, they gave you a payoff.

And once you understand that, breaking habits that don’t serve you becomes a very different process.

Here are three myths about breaking bad habits that are keeping you stuck.

Myth #1: “I just need more willpower.”

If willpower were enough, you would have already changed the habit.

The truth is, your bad habit is probably giving you some kind of payoff.

It might protect you from risk.
Pacify stress.
Placate other people.
Or make you feel worthy, needed, or in control.

That payoff is why the habit keeps winning in the moment, even when you know it’s hurting you in the long run.

So instead of asking, “How do I stop doing this?”

Ask: “What am I getting from this?”

Then find a better way to get it.

Ask yourself: “What would my highest self do right now?”

Then do the smallest version of that.

If your highest self would work for an hour, give yourself five focused minutes.

If your highest self would have the difficult conversation, write the first sentence.

If your highest self would put down the phone, start with ten minutes.

Replace the payoff, not just the behavior.

Myth #2: “If I remove the trigger, I’ll be free.”

It sounds logical.
Remove the trigger, remove the habit.
But you can’t remove every trigger from your life.

Stress will happen.
Uncertainty will happen.
Other people will frustrate you.

You will have difficult days.

The goal isn’t to create a life where you never get triggered.

The goal is to practice a better response when you do.

And you don’t want to wait until you’re exhausted, stressed, or overwhelmed to figure out what that response should be.

Rehearse it when you’re calm.

Picture the moment when the old trigger shows up.

Then practice what you’ll do instead.

Again. And again.

Because the response you rehearse becomes the response you’re more likely to reach for when it counts.

Myth #3: “I have to quit perfectly, all at once.”

This is where a lot of people give up.

They slip once and decide they’ve blown it.

They miss one workout.

Eat the thing they said they wouldn’t eat.

Lose an hour scrolling.

And suddenly the whole week is “ruined.”

But real change doesn’t happen in one dramatic decision. It happens one clean rep at a time.

Give the new habit a daily time block.
Create a tiny first output.
Then notice and celebrate the better payoff.

You’re teaching your brain: This feels good. I can do this. Do it again.

That’s how a new pattern starts to take hold.

Not because you suddenly became a completely different person.

Because you gave yourself enough repetitions to make a different choice feel more natural.

So the next time you catch yourself falling into an old habit, don’t immediately reach for shame.

Get curious.

What payoff am I getting from this?

What would my highest self do instead?

What’s the smallest version of that choice I can make right now?

Because you don’t need to become perfect.

You need to practice a better response often enough that it becomes your new default.

Understand the payoff. Rehearse the replacement. Repeat the better choice.

You don't need another Sunday-night promise to yourself. You need a plan that sticks, that's why I want you to join me for my LIVE First Monday training on Breaking Bad Habits on Monday, September 7th at 9am Pacific.

We’ll map your biggest habit loop, identify its hidden payoff, and script the exact replacement routine you’ll rehearse this week so this time it actually sticks.
